Why can't I find this part?
Posted by: Black
Date: July 01, 2012 10:27PM
Sunglass holder broke off friend's 2008 Jetta.
Trying to find it here:
You'd think with full schematics it wouldn't be so hard-- would appreciate any help figuring out what I'm doing wrong.
Maybe there's a different place to look than "body hardware"/ "roof?"

This is a compartment that hangs down when open and is just big enough for a pair of sunglasses-- it's centered in the roof liner near the windshield. Per search it seems lots of folks have trouble with it coming open on its own, which is why it got broken...

Any chance that it's part #13 in the diagram, described as "tray"?

Pretty sure that's the wrong part. That is the sunglasses holder over the driver side door.

What Black described is the same as my Beetle. It is in the center above the rear view mirror.

Thanks for the footwork, but this is not a replacement for the factory sunglass holder-- it's an optional accessory that you can replace the stock grab handles with.

Not 100% sure but I think you may be right. I must have ruled it out because it looks so small and chunky . . . thanks.

Here's a pic of one in situ that looks awfully close (need to take another look when the car is here.)

BTW interesting price spread by color on this site . . . please let it be gray (car is black, so pretty likely, no?)

Call a VW dealer in the morning. The parts department will tell you the part number and how much it costs. If they have the VIN they can look up the color it came with as well.

That looks like a likely candidate to me as well.

Thanks. Absolutely no daytime phone time until Wednesday 7/4.

That looks like a likely candidate to me as well.

Wish it was like some appliance parts sites with pictures of the actual part with a grid backing to see measurements.

Perhaps it's Part#: 1K0 868 837 E

Sometimes it's easiest to search eBay with a description, i.e. "Jetta Sunglasses" and browse until you find it.

Or Part # 1K0 867 489 for the entire roof console.

Sunglasses holders are also good for holding Dollar Store reading glasses for maps! And, yes I still carry paper maps in my car.

If there is a boneyard nearby, you could look there.

That was going to be my suggestion. Best if it's a "Pull-A-Part" or similar boneyard where you can poke around to your heart's content without an employee breathing down your neck the whole time.

Thanks for the additional tips. While I have, at past stages of my life, thoroughly enjoyed picking through hulks of cars for some part I needed, I have way too little free time these days, and limited options within reasonable bus/bicycle range, so if I can get a new part shipped for under $30 I'm there, end of story.
