First day of Pinkoos vacation
Posted by: Black
Date: July 05, 2012 10:16PM
I'm not due back at work until 7/16. Gonna have me a Pinkoos-style vacation; shooting for 7 concerts in 7 days.
On the slate is Dave Matthews Band, Wilco/ Andrew Bird, Death Cab for Cutie, Barenaked Ladies/@#$%&/Bighead Todd/Blues Traveler, and very likely this modest lil' gig here to fill in the remaining hole:

Would feel like "summer vacation" if I didn't have a list of errands to check off . . .

That's funny (just to me), stacking DMB and Big Head Todd. Back in college, I was going to work stage crew for DMB opening for Big Head Todd. Right before the show, DMB got pulled from the tour due to their first album blowing up nationally, I assume so they could go on a headlining tour and make promotional appearances. I was bummed. I was looking forward to DMB (the relative nobodies) more than Big Head Todd (who were great too). I still have the backstage pass with the double billing on it around here somewhere.

Not all of these are acts I'm absolutely dying to see, but they're sort of in the right place at the right time. DMB-- absolutely first choice though.
They weren't much more to me than an occasional treat vs. annoyance on the radio back when they first broke out in the early 90s, but through concert vids and recordings of the past 10 years or so I've gotten hooked only very recently.
2nd in terms of enthusiasm is John Popper-- I think he's a rare/unique/under-appreciated talent. Tied with Death Cab-- seen 'em twice in the past year so it'll be more comfortable than exciting.

Looks like a fun week!

Be here now. Be someplace else later. Is that so complicated?

Bern-
That's funny. I'm amazed they were let off the tour. Back in the late 70's I worked stage crew for Al Stewart. He'd contracted for a college concert about two years before. And then "The Year of the Cat" album blew the top off the charts. His people tried to buy out of the contract, but the college didn't budge. Best attended concert we ever had. He did a good show, but it was very lean (minimal crew and band). First time I ever had to keep groupies away from backstage.. and I knew a bunch of them. It was kind of awkward.

I've attempted to find something I like about DMB, but have yet to find any strong thread that keeps me there for longer than a song or two. A jam band is a great thing to have, but... oh, maybe I'll give it another try again.

That seems to be a popular position (although not universally popular as DMB can still sell out almost any venue). In my case I was given most of their catalog by someone I dated who was a huge fan, and have had a pretty substantial playlist on my 'Pod for a bunch of years . . . pretty much aren't any dogs anywhere in the catalogue, although some of the songs take a while to get in your ear. I think the vast majority of DMB detractors have never heard more than 3 songs.
Yours is not the first comment I've heard dismissive of "jam bands . . ." I personally can't figure out what's not to like about a "jam band."

Perhaps I didn't properly express my sentiment. I like jam bands, good jam bands, I just don't hear that in DMB, mostly because it's just too....er, "uninteresting"?

But, tastes in jam bands are different. I have written here in the past that I like My Morning Jacket and they are certainly a type of jam band, somewhat in the DMB mould, but much more interesting, IMO. And, I seem to recall that you said you could not get into them, so there is something you can't figure out about MMJ and their jambandedness, too. TETO.

Yeah, that's funny, MMJ just sounds derivative and uninteresting to me, and think I've given them more than a fair chance (hear at least 5 of their songs on the radio all the time, and I watched their entire Lollapalooza broadcast on Youtube last year) and I guess DMB sounds that way to you. The good thing is that I'm usually a helpless marketing victim when my station starts plugging some concert, but they've been pushing an MMJ and Band of Horses show and it's kind of refreshing being able to ignore the commercials.
