Can't vote. Have 2 cats and 1 dog, no choice for that. I don't want a bird, reptile or rodent and especially not one of those etc.'s.

Four cats, four dogs (my preferred species), and "had" a Quaker parrot that I re-homed due to health issues. Had many other critters over the years: horses, chickens, geese, ducks, gerbils, hamsters, mice (never again), frog, turtles, raccoon...

I voted number 4 even though we just have cats now. I love dogs, cats, mice, rats, spiders, birds, whatever. Not too crazy about snakes, but I wouldn't throw it out if it showed up. Have had most of those over the years. My wife still misses her tarantula.

mice (never again)...

Male or female?

I'd never keep males again. They stink and they pee on everything... but the females are generally pretty clean and friendly.

Needed a cat and dog category, and maybe bunnies too.

Three dogs here.

But as to kind, I like both cats and dogs.

I do say "No" to birds, rodentia, and reptiles.

I'd like to have a dog and/or a cat
but my schedule would mean their being alone and/or at day care on an irregular basis and that wouldn't be fair to them.

I can spoil my mom's dog. devil smiley

I've even cut back on indoor plants.

dogs are teh evil; as far as I can tell, their sole reason for existence is to wake up the neighborhood with incessant barking and leave poop-bombs all over the neighborhood sidewalks...

Only (small) freshwater aquariums these days, but I would own a dog if it wasn't for allergies that continue to get worse as I get older.

Arf! Arf! Bark! Bark! Barkity Bark!

I love ALL the creatures. ALL OF THEM! I even have respect for rats. They make me feel happy to be a part of the earth with them. I'm open to stealing all of the wayward dogs from their irresponsible owners and taking them back to the Daisy HIll Puppy Farm, where a portion of our taxes would provide loving care.

Neighbors have referred to our home as The Petting Zoo. Doggies and Kitties, and one Parrot. All the pocket pets have since passed on, and I refuse to add any more critters that have a lifespan less than 10 years. Sorry... Warm blooded only need apply. I've had snakes and turtles briefly, but they are just not snuggly to me.

I have three cats and a poochie. All I can say about the cats is that their fur is softer than my dog's.

I didn't answer because I'm a cat person but my son is clinically (as in emergency room) allergic.

So we have the closest thing - super smart dogs that think like cats, two standard rescue poodles. Our first uses her paws like a cat - the only dog I've ever seen that reaches unde furniture to get her lost toys.

I grew up in a zoo, including pet ducks (cute but stupid), geese (nothing but mean, should have roasted them years ago), Saint Bernards (3 at one time), a bunch of cats, and a parrot that's over 50 years old now. Have had hamsters (living tribbles), a guinea pig, and lots and lots of fish.

As a cat person, I really never understood dogs. I recently read about a terrific study comparing wolf puppies and dog puppies. Wolf puppies are 90% likely to pick out an adult wolf instead of a human when asked to pick a parent. Dog puppies will randomly pick people or dogs. Dogs are programmed to be our companions - they expect us to be their partner to solve problems, etc. That insight makes it a lot easier to understand these critters compared to cats (where I'm clearly their servant, as accurately noted earlier in the thread).

I love dogs but I know I don't have the time or energy to have one. But since I walk a few dogs, I get plenty of dog time.

My cats haven't conformed to the stereotype of aloofness and independence. They've been sweet, mushy critters, for the most part.

I could see having an aquarium or a rat at some point. Would love to have a horse again, but that's just not in the cards anymore.

Same here. My schedule won't allow me to devote proper time to a pet. Also I like to travel whenever possible, and no matter how carefully you explain to a pet that you'll be back in a few days and no matter how much they seem to understand you, they still feel abandoned until you get back.

We have had Cats, dog, rats, gerbils, hamsters, squirrels, birds, gunea pigs, rabbits, fish and turtles.
Now we just have cats an Koi. I have always liked cats because they don't require my attention all the time.
We almost had a monkey but it bit my uncle the day before he was going to give it to us so he took it back.

Agreed. I have two neighbors with bad dogs (owners actually). One of them has one dog, and the other has THREE damn dogs. A few nights ago, the neighbors dog - the one with one dog - started barking incessantly for absolutely no reason at around one AM. I got out of bed, and went and rang their doorbell until this woman finally came to the door. I complained about the dog, and her response was that "he's just excited". I threatened to call the police, and they finally quieted the damn thing down.

I love the shock collars. When the dog barks the collar has an increasingly greater shock per bark. Hard to get the owner to wear the collar, though.

Enjoy all animals. Horribly allergic to cats. Grew up with dogs. Currently have 2. Most likely to continue having dogs. As we age we will adopt senior dogs.
