Printer IP recognized, repeatedly says "busy"

I've had this problem for a while and thought maybe the last system got messed up somehow.

My old HP 4000TN printer is recognized via the IP, and worked perfectly for a long time.

Then, one morning I get up and it says "busy" each time I tried to access it. Nothing has worked to get it back. I've re-added the printer, etc.

I'm now downloading the latest HP drivers for Lion, hoping for a miracle.

If you have any ideas I'd love to hear them.

Thanks.

Confirm that the IP address hasn't changed in the printer-settings or using the configuration-printout.

Sometimes them printer thingys need a proper hub/switch to be connected to, and over the years, I've seen ports go bad... IOW, check your connections, 'cause every now and then, even when everything looks like it's connected the way it should be, portus interuptus happens. Try swapping ports on your hub/switch. I assume you've power cycled printer, router, hub/switch, computers. Good luck, and hopefully the Lion drivers will help.

I just installed the new HP drivers, still no luck.

Selected the same IP as before...

Now, I'm getting "printer paused" messages. I resume, and it just pauses, over and over.

Aaarrrgggh.

That's usually a communications error.

Can you make a working print queue when the printer is connected directly to the Mac?

I get constant communication errors but eventually get the POS Canon to work. Connect direct through a USB cable, see what happens.

I've had the same problem with an HP printer, and the only thing I could do to reset it was to turn the printer on and off again, and then re-print (or resume) the print job.

When a Brother printer refused to print, I got it working by first deleting the printer driver from the Mac and then rebooting, checking to see that the driver was gone and finally downloading and installing the latest driver from the web site. A previous attempt, simply overinstalling the existing driver appeared to be successful but printing still failed. Like yours, everything "looked" ok, but the darn thing just wouldn't print.

Turn the printer off and leave it off for 2 minutes. Then turn it back on. But unplug it from the outlet after you turn it off.

EDIT: after two minutes, plug it back in and turn it on. Whisper sweet nothings in the USB port.

Should have mentioned this earlier...the HP 4000TN does not offer a USB connection. I'm hooked up via Ethernet.

Thanks.

So, the problem "printer is busy" comes up both from a MBP with Snow Leopard and one with Lion.

Does anybody have any specific knowledge from the HP side?

Is there something with the printer itself that could be blocking the signal, or telling the computer that the printer is busy?

I ran a reset with the printer, but I realize that it could be something else.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.

I have an HP LJ1320 that is connected to an Airport Express. It almost never works correctly. I have to unplug the Airport Express and restart the printer to get it to work again. Even then, the window is about 5 minutes until it quits again.

I would gouge out my eye if I had to perform that sort of jiggery pokery every time I printed.

How is the printer hooked in to the system? Is it hooked directly to a computer, or is it connected to a router and all the other computers can then see it?

Ive got a similar problem with an HP 4250n. I finally figured out that I need to power down my Ethernet switch for about a minute ( printer is connected to the Ethernet switch. Won't even work connected directly to a computer), then restart the switch and everything works fine again.

Hope this helps, belatedly.
