Disable Safari search?

Anyone know how to disable search function in the Safari menubar? I don't use usual search engines and really dislike how Safari decides to search if the url is either unknown or lacking suffix.

I'd like to know as well, but I don't think there is a way. I preferred the URL & search be separated.

If Apple decided you needed to have it that way then it is for your own good.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

I saw this as a feature of Safari 6 so I haven't updated yet. That said, in Chrome if you want it to just add .com to whatever you type, hit control as you hit return. Same goes for IE.
