Using an iPhone without phone option

What can an iPhone 4 do, if it is not hooked up to a data plan?, Can it work with WIFI?, Can it then send Emails, and iMessages? or will it just be good for playing music like and iPod?

Even make Skype style phone calls as long as you have WiFi.

iMessages if signed in with Apple ID. Can also make/receive calls via gmail/google voice using Talkatone. If you've got a good wifi signal its pretty much as good as a phone.
