First day of new job...DONE.

Phew! Wasn't too bad. Lots and lots and lots of HR stuff. Including reading and watching ISO9000 videos. Ugh! I had to try REALLY hard to stay awake. I believe I was introduced to everyone in the company. I remember about 5 of them.

The worst part? I have to use a PC. Not only that. It's a Dell Latitude (A laptop fer cryin' out loud) with 4...FOUR! gb of RAM!!!! I cannot remember the last time I ever used a machine with less than 16gb. And only like a 300gb HD. Seriously though. Windows 7 isn't THAT bad. But all the endless chewing away from lack of RAM is going to get tiresome VERY quickly.

Other than that. Seems promising.

Like I said. The OS isn't all bad. It's just the lack of system resources is really crippling to someone who uses the Adobe Creative Suite for 99% of their day.

It's on my list. I figure I should give it at least a day or two before I start whining for more stuff. I need a turbomouse too. And a comfy chair. And a taller monitor stand. And. And...and...

Sadly, I think it's only a year old. Luckily, Crucial shows that I can put up to 8gb of RAM in it.

Glad to hear things went well. I don't think Windows 7 is that bad for casual use. : )

BTW, wait a couple of days before you start complaining about your computer. smile smiley

Congrats ! Ah. The HR guys. Blah, blah , blah .

Computing will improve. I recall my first week in 1994 when I argued with the boss why I needed a computer of my own . Since my job was 90% computer. Explaining that he would be paying me to sit on my hands half the time made the difference.

Congratulations! Hope you have many, many, many more days at the job.

Making the boss wait for a job s/he really wants due to slow processing should sell the need pretty quickly.

Oh, and Congratulations on the new job. Hope it is a good one for you.

Congrats on the first day...

Folks here have any advice on how to handle the first day of a new boss on the job? Specifically, the boss of my boss starts tomorrow (should have started today but unresolved HR issues had to get cleared up) and he just happens to also be my first boss from my first post-college job.

Isn't going from 4GB to 8GB like a $40 upgrade these days...? It's not like 8GB RAM for a Mac II in 1987, which adjusted for inflation, would be over $4,000,000 today. First time the boss offers to take you to lunch, or drinks after work, suggest the RAM upgrade, and everybody wins. Congrats on the new (albeit temporarily underpowered) gig.

Congrats - and do enjoy the honeymoon.

As for what to do with a new boss - I'd personally recommend 1) do your job and 2) let the new person have a little time to evaluate and integrate.

Sure you could! But it was the size of a refrigerator and cost big bucks from IBM, or a few other suppliers. We had a couple on a CAD/CAM system running on an IBM mid-size system in '84. IBM 3380 DASD, 1.2 GB of storage on the initial models, later models doubled the density to store 2.5 GB.

In the field, I get XP and a whole G o' RAM. A whole 1G.

There should have been a hand crank included with that laptop.
