stand-off in Alabama

the guy and the kid are in an underground bunker and police atre talking to them through a PVC Ventilation pipe. They were able to send some food and coloring books for the kid.

here is my question: can they put some sort of gas to make both the guy and the kid asleep, then go in and rescue the kid and handcuff the guy? is there such a gas that will make them sleepy but not damage the kid's brain?

I would think that any gas that would knock the guy out would do more damage to the smaller boy first.

This is how it would happen in a TV show.... apparently the kid needs meds and he allowed them to send down meds. They would exchange meds for an antidote to the gas they will put in, so he is unaffected and the bad guy falls asleep (or dies, whichever is fine). Alas, this is not a TV show. Sooooo sad for the kid and family.

This just looks like there's going to be a bad outcome for that poor kid.

I was thinking about the gas option too. My concern was that it would not act fast enough, he'd sense something was wrong, and panic. That would be bad for the kid.

I'm guessing that anyone that went to the trouble of building a survivalist bunker probably has their own monogramed gas mask.

I wonder what the old guy wants?

What did he think would happen?

Why do I think anyone that would do this has two brain cells to figure that out.....

Extremely sad. Hoping for a safe outcome for this child, his poor parents must be in agony.

any gas that would knock the guy out would might do more damage to the smaller boy first.

This is a very real concern. Then there's the boy's medication. And as mentioned, if the hostage-taker wasn't put out fast enough, he might kill the kid. Very very risky.

Even if all that went as planned, the rescue time has to get into the bunker in before the suspect revives or the boy succumbs.

There might even be @#$%& traps to counter forced entry.

A very bad situation any way you look at it.

At this point, I think negotiation is the only possible tactic for the successful rescue of the boy.

Russians did that and ended up killing several hostages from the effects of the gas, IIRC.

I would guess that once the whack job falls asleep they could gas enough to keep him down without hurting the innocent child.

Assuming you can get to the child before he stops breathing from the effects of the gas.

Better to wear down the hostage taker over a number of days and get him to come out instead.
