monitor sizzling and smoking

My wife just called frantically telling me that there was sizzling sound and lots of smoke in the basement. Coming from my desk. Of course she couldn't tell the what was ground zero. The MacPro still had the little white light on in the front. But neither monitor would show the desktop. So I told her to power down everything and unplug it. Yeesh! I hope it's a monitor. At least that would be the cheapest to replace. Relatively speaking.

Yes. If she hadn't calmed down enough while I was on the phone. As far as the computer goes. It's just "stuff". All my "stuff" is backed up several times over so I'm not too worried about that. I'm fairly sure its one of the monitors. Although which one i don't know. They're both fairly old.

The MacPro heard about you getting a new Dell at work and blew a fuse.

If your MacPro is one of the old liquid cooling models I have bad news for you! I had a client with a liquid cooled model who happened to be in his office when it began smoking and sizzling. He sent it to me for a tear down and diagnosis. Proved to be the liquid had leaked down to the power supply and rusted through the outer metal case of same. Apple stonewalled him on the matter but he submitted a claim to his insurance company and they paid off for a replacement using the pictures I provided. Never did like that concept and held off nearly two years on buying my MacPro until the top end models eliminated the liquid cooling. Please post back with your findings, I hope it is a monitor for your sake, if not it gives you a great reason to jump in for the latest and greatest and the accompanying Mountain Lion OS.

My bad, hope he has a MacPro and not the liquid cooled PowerMac G5 I was thinking of.

And strictly speaking there are liquid cooled Mac Pros, but it is aftermarket modification by super geeks.

tortoise keeps calling PowerMac G5's as Mac Pros. It's his idiosyncrasy.

I had a monitor burst into flames at work. It was a brief show that excited everyone, got the monitor a place of honor outside and stunk up the whole building.

LOL hey bazookaman I do currently have a MacPro, (early 2008 model) but as space time noted they look identical and I am always somewhat careless about minor details when responding before 7:00am on my first cup of coffee. Hey they are both aluminum Towers, just the innards that differ.

Identical from the front with the exception of 2 optical drive doors on the Mac Pro vs. 1 on G5's.

Some say the innards are more important than the outards.
