no isight, now what?

A friend told me today that apple is no longer selling the isight. While you can get a camera built into the MacBook, MacBookPro, and the imac, what do people with a tower or mini do for a camera?

My Sony camcorder with iLink works fine, in fact much better color, and works better in low light.

I see a MacPro with a periscope :-)

I am betting on iSight built into new displays, And these displays will somehow also tie into the iTV.

I am thinking that the iTV will not be named that--maybe dropping any "i" except in consumer (iMac) and iPod devices

Is there an alternative?

BGnR, did you ever try iglasses?

I thought one of the reasons the isight is so much better is because it has built in hardware compression and another one is that the line of sight is much better by mounting at the top of the monitor.

davemchine, How about ebay or craigslist. What about checking to see if any Apple brick and mortar or compusa or someone actually has some old stock yet.

You think it is just sold out rather than discontinued? I'm really in no rush, asking out of curiosity.

iGlasses is fine but cannot overcome hardware limitations, small CCD, okay lens, limited low light capability, pump up the brightness with iGlasses and you get tons of noise.

iSight has only the hardware compression that the DV chip provides, which is the same that iLink/FireWire provides. My camcorder is mounted in the same plane as an iSight.

DisContinued, hopefully to be replaced, probably by a USB2 model that is much cheaper, and smaller. Most likely the same hardware that is in the new computers. Not as good, but folks will accept it.

Anyone have experience with the iSweet FireWire web camera that Small Dog has listed? Their site says it is back ordered. The list price is $109.

I'm in the camp that bets Apple will have a new iSight version launched at Macworld.

Likely USB2 based given the current built in versions now are USB devices... and should mean cheaper - hopefully they did other upgrades, no reason they couldn't of now.

Two weeks to MacWorld Expo and Job's Keynote. This is just the kind of teaser/slow start stuff that build the anticipation to the big release parts of the presentation. smiling smiley

Likely USB since the internal iSight uses USB--and maybe an iChat client for Windows--to support the iChat phone---some how Google will get tied in to all this???

No, it didn't sell out. It's being redesigned, along with the Airport.

I speculate it will return as a vastly lower-priced, USB2 camera that includes iChat for PC.

Mint take note -- that's my prediction.
