This is the most I can offer right now and do so with some risk. This is an early rendering of the OWC/Axiotron 'ModBook' Tablet Mac built off of an Apple MacBook.



A rendering that doesn't do it justice - but it's the only image was able to dig out....

Say what you want. It is not a fake. And it's a pretty darn good renedering of what's under the red.

That appears to be a quick Photoshop comp of the bottom half of a Macbook with a monitor slapped over the keyboard.

Not saying thats not a close approximation of the product, but if I had to create a mock-up quickly, that would be it.

Another effort was Go's tablet computer using Go's Penpoint operating system and manufactured by various hardware makers such as NCR and IBM. IBM's Thinkpad tablet computer was based on Penpoint operating system and used IBM's handwriting recognition. This recognition system was later ported to Microsoft Windows for Pen, and IBM's Pen for OS/2. None of these were commercially successful.

First off, that image being there is of an entirely different conversation. But as the cat is well out of the bag - so be it.

Without confirming or denying any authenticity of the aforementioned and trustingly well intentioned post - i can say it's pretty accurate to what's to be introduced next week.

No picture and certainly not any rendition does the real product justice though.

Concerning some ill fated tablets of the past.... The reason Apple has not done a purely tablet Mac type product to this point is likely related to the market demand for such an item. When you look at the overall demand for Tablet PCs and then look at the current market share the Mac OS has (which is now really starting to grow - love that!), it's not a product that makes sense for Apple to support just by the unit numbers they could expect to sell.

Having said that - it's the perfect type of niche for OWC and Axiotron to support. There are several very specific target user types for this product who've been waiting years for it too.

And yes, it makes sense for a niche market to be served by a niche company. Don't be surprised if Apple moves in after the concept takes off, of course! But by then, hopefully you've made your nice chunk of change.

albeit, the piebook would be a surprise. i can't really imagine what other configuration options there realistically are.

the "super-secret-don't-ask-how-i-got-this-photo" game seems a little silly.

We had that checked too - was setup as a signature file. And happy with the MR 'credit' as it certainly helped in any decision to leave it live. win win I guess.

I am interested in seeing it up close at Macworld next week.

I am still wondering what the price point will be. Probably double that of the current Macbook.

but to a medical office, if it prevents just a few errors vs doing it old school with paper and pen, and maybe transcribing later, well worth it.
