Leopard annoyances

Okay, I have some real pet peeves with Leopard....

1. Repairing permissions takes FOREVER.

2. I can't unmount external drives from the Finder window. I click the little eject icon, but nothing happens. Also, dragging the drive to the trash does nothing. The only I can disconnect them is to use Disk Utility, which is very annoying.

3. To connect to my AirDisk, I have to physically turn the drive off and back on again. If I eject it, I can't reconnect without restarting it. This is also very annoying, as the drive is in another room.

I'm using a 17" MBP C2D, by the way. It's not like I'm trying this on something that's barely Leopard compatible. I think I might go back to TIger.

Oh yeah...

4. I can't set some folders to use icon view and some to use list view, etc. When I switch in one folder, it changes the view for every folder on the computer (as well as on an external drive).

Address Book will not launch for me. Instantly quits unexpectedly.
That's my only problem so far.

UPDATE- that was the old Address Book that got migrated over. The new one was in there too and works fine. Same deal with Calculator.

External drives unmount for me.

My problem is that the screen saver seems to lock upon launch, so the initial image never changes. Moving the mouse or clicking a key clears the screensaver as one would expect. There's just no movement of the 'saver.

4. I can't set some folders to use icon view and some to use list view, etc. When I switch in one folder, it changes the view for every folder on the computer (as well as on an external drive).

In one of the myriad reviews, it said that that's the way it's supposed to work. The Finder will show every subsequent folder using the view type that was used with the last folder you viewed.

If you want specific folders to open in specific views, you need to set them individually and check the "Always open in" checkbox. Unless somebody writes a script or app to set this for multiple folders, it will be a repetitive chore.

FTFF is a lost cause. Apple doesn't care about the spatial Finder concepts old Mac users know and like. It's either adapt to the new way, or go away.

Thanks for this info. It helped a lot. I didn't realize I could manually set the view for each folder.

Have you repaired a second time after a restart? It should be faster.

Yup, just restarted. Repair permissions took almost 6 minutes.

I've posted my list, which gets longer every day, at [www.uner.com]

I am stunned that Apple, the (arguably) UI authority modified their own HIGs to basically justify some of the poor UI choices.

And honestly, did they even try some of these new "features?" Far too many are broken or have poor user experiences for average use cases.

I have been a Mac user and supporter since 1994, and this is the first time I feel Apple has taken a giant step backwards.
