Gary Krakow: ‘Steve Jobs has either gotta get BlackBerry or Windows Mobile on iPhone’

"Steve Jobs has to bite the bullet... He's either gotta get BlackBerry on there or Windows Mobile on there. It's the entire answer."

Unbelievable! And this is their tech guy?

I have long been of the opinion that if work were such a splendid thing the rich would have kept more of it for themselves.

Even better, his supporting evidence comes from circa 2003 data:

"Blackberry is very entrenched"
Ummmm.... every casino corporation in Nevada that was using Blackberry servers in the early 2000's have DUMPED them... (continued after next quote)

"Not many minuses for either one"
...because they are the most heinous, troublesome servers to try and maintain on the networks. I've heard reports that techs spent twice as much time maintaining, just MAINTAINING, their Blackberry servers, that doesn't even account for the time they had to spend setting them up!

This guy sounds like he just reads the buzzwords and likes to spin what he has read from other non-informed tech writers. It never ceases to amaze me how these folks who bash one company or another (in this case Apple) and still retain jobs.

He seems to come from the school of thought that the future is written with what works now, not who has the most interesting solution to change what is not working. Not that Apple has the best solution for everything they do, but they are keeping quite a few executives up at night and the iPhone has changed the market that many analysts have said was "entrenched".

If I paid for an analyst who was consistently "off the mark" (meaning, wrong), they would be fired.

I didn't hear any numbers such as percentage market share in any of his discussion. It was pure FUD.

He gushed over the market dominance of BlackBerry, but didn't give numbers. He foretold that BlackBerry would be "entrenched" even more if Apple didn't bite the bullet. How has BlackBerry's market share changed over the last year? Gone up? Gone down?

I suspect that RIM is losing market share to iPhone currently. From the advertisements I see now on televeision, RIM is scared of the iPhone.

He is totally missing the point of the iPhone if he thinks that the solution for Apple is to replace the current OS on it with that of the BlackBerry's or Windows Mobile. For the most part, the iPhone isn't doing anything that other phones can't do. People buy the iPhone because of the Apple-designed OS.

I can understand the attraction for adding client software to the iPhone to receive mail from the RIM servers already in place. This would permit the iPhone to coexist in a RIM-dominated workplace. RIM wouldn't want this, of course, since nobody would want to purchase another BlackBerry. Jobs wouldn't want this since he would lose quality control. Thus RIM + Jobs = not gonna happen.

What's the question? I can't imagine Windows Mobile being the answer to anything other than "name a clunky mobile OS."

SJ's egoism, notwithstanding, he does have a knack for creating new standards, not employing someone elses. Apple would not be the Apple we know otherwise. It would be another HP. This is no state secret so making open suggestions that SJ conform is a waste of pixels or ink or both.

Hang on a minute guys. Maybe he's got a point, you know? Maybe he's right.

Nah....I could sniff glue, smoke crack, and take horse tranquilizers all day, and still never be able to find an alternate reality where that makes any sense.

Enterprise is looking to move away from Blackberry. The licensing fees are big money and Blackberry email servers have not been reliable, just look at the outages they have had. My wife's company went to Samsung Blackjacks in order to save $500,000/yr licensing fees with RIM.

That is why Apple decided to license ActiveSync from MS. Most companies already have Exchange Servers. An iPhone with ActiveSync will function with Corporate email the same way a Windows Mobile device will. Wireless email reliability will be based upon the reliability or redundancy of a company's Exchange Servers.

Given all the companies he's turned around, I'm surprised he's not on Apple's board already.
