can a digicam shut down a desktop computer system?

Yes, it can! Every time I plug in the USB cable to the AipTek digicam (Hey, it's a free gift!) which already occupies our XP SP3 desktop's USB port, the entire system shuts down. Why is that? The same procedure with Kodak EasyShare C875 creates no problems. The USB cable belongs to Kodak digicam. Should there be a conflict using a different USB cable on a different digicam?

I suppose there "shouldn't" be a difference, assuming the correct size/shape USB connector is used (a surprising variety of USB connector shapes seem to be out there).

But, maybe a proprietary USB cable by one or the other company. It could happen.

Hardware the computer sees as icky (technical term) is more likely to cause a kernel panic, which I assume is what you mean by "shut down".

No 'kernel panic' here. Connecting the USB cable to the AipTek cam, which connects to the XP's USB port power off the XP machine entirely. I have to wait for a minute before I can power up the machine again ... after disconnecting the USB cable, of course.

Sounds like the power drain from the cam either
(1) exceeds the USB specs, or
(2) tips the power supply past its power delivery capability
or
(3) the USB cable is bad (internal short power-to-ground)

and the crowbar circuitry kicks in, saving the power supply from burnout.
You may need
(1)(2) a higher capacity supply (400W instead of 275W)
or
(3) different USB cable

Thanks for the clarification, TheCaber. I am looking at using USB cable that already comes with the device.
