How is it that ants survive in the microwave?

I just nuked some soup and when I popped it in the microwave a tiny sugar ant was running around on the bottom of the bowl. When I took the bowl out he was still running around. How do these little buggers survive?

Just be glad it didn't make him stronger or split him into two more ants.

I already explained it once.

Inside your microwave, there is a pattern of hot and cold spots. That's because the microwaves are, well, waves inside a fixed space. And they're long waves, too, 12 cm wavelength being common. Take the carousel out of your microwave and put in a shallow tray of sugar. Cook it on high and you'll see where the hot spots are.

Microwaves have turntables to keep the food moving so they cook evenly.

An ant can navigate through the cold spots and stay safe. It helps that they're so small, with very little fat or water to them. Put a thousand ants in your microwave and put it on high and you will see them quickly leave hot spots for cold.

They do get agitated, because the moisture in the air heats up, and even the ones that live probably get too warm for comfort. As far as I know, ants respond to danger by scrambling rather than sitting still, so they go crazy in a microwave.

That's a lot of pesto.

What I wanna know (and maybe Mike Johnson has already answered this, too), is why you left an ant on a bowl of soup if you saw it before you started the microwave. Just for the sake of science? ;-)
