What kind of shifters do I need for this bike (pic)

I bought this bike used a few years ago, and I really like it. But the right-hand (small derailleur) shifter is now cracked and broken. I'd like to replace it, and Nashbar is having a 20% off sale right now.

I'd like to work on the bike myself, so if someone could help me figure out what to buy, I would appreciate it.

Here is a (bad) picture of the bike, but I think you can see what kind of shifters they are.

It's fairly critical to know how many cogs there are on the rear wheel and the brand and model of derailleur (SRAM, Shimano, etc) to get the right shifter. Check out this page...there are some shifters there that look a bit like yours. [www.sheldonbrown.com]

OK. I will get some more data and take more pictures.

I guess I may need a bike shop. I don't want to spend too much money on this old bike. I can't believe how much these parts can cost!

Thanks for the advice.

In Denver they have a place where you can get bike parts for free. Don't know if you have anything like that in your area.
