I had a Speck case for a Macbook Pro on eBay for BIN $14.95.
Someone buys it and when I sent the invoice I get this reply:
"I aplogize for any inconvenience, but I thought I bought a laptop, and not the case.
Can you please cancel the transaction. "

How big an idiot must you be to think you are getting a laptop for $14.95?

Very annoying, but not much I can do but file a dispute for non-payment.

Make sure you check to see what other items he's bid on to make sure he didn't find it at a lower price and decide to just lie to you.

Well, he really IS an idiot. I sent him an email stating that he entered into a legally binding contract when he bought the case and I expected him to pay the invoice. Well, guess what...he did? Paypal payment just came through. Amazing!!!

At this point, I have to say I have more respect for him than for you. He made an honest mistake which did not cost you anything except slight inconvenience (it is not like he stopped a heated bidding) and you were not willing to enter into a dialogue with him. On the other hand, he will probably be more more careful next time or stop using ebay alltogether - I'd say it was a cheap lesson for him (depending how much you are charging for shipping).

A bid's a bid. He may as well learn now that when you bid you buy.

Sorry I do not get the chance to frequently check email some days. Also I was not really planning on winning this bid. I put a price in just to see because I had to leave the computer for about a day, and this morning to my surprise, my bid won. Makes me wonder that maybe there really were not too many people bidding on this computer.

Anyway, I noticed that you say you will only except PayPal. I will not use PayPal. About two years ago I had a conflict with them and they are still holding a few hundred dollars of my money while the dispute is being settled. (They are (or at least were) not as secure as you might think.)

I believe I still have, somewhere, an external SCSI Travan 20GB tape drive, boxed up and ready to ship to the guy who won the auction for it back in 2003. It went for a measly $30 or so, and the guy never paid. He did e-mail me, to express his surprise that he had won. Seemed like a nice enough guy, but he apparently didn't understand that people shouldn't bid on things that they don't want to win.

How can you call it an honest mistake? Who in their right mind would even dream of getting a laptop computer - even a broken one - for $14.95? That is, unless he thought he was paying $1495 for a laptop. I think the fact that he eventually paid for it speaks for itself.

Well, he made a mistake for whatever reason, tried to get out of it, you were not interested, and he paid for it. The bottom line is that he did the right and honorable thing in the end and you are considering him an even greater idiot for it. That is what I do not get.
