My favorite record review of all time was in Musician magazine back in the 80's. It was for the debut (and only) album by a 'supergroup' called GTR ("guitar" minus the vowels) made up of Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, and a bunch of studio guys.

The review was also three letters: "SHT."

If you want to read the most hilarious in-depth movie review ever, read this (NSFW):

#2 was also a direct to video production. Apparently they have little to do with the original film's director or cast beyond a few supporting roles. #3 does have Caspar Van Dien back as Johnny Rico. Just another excuse to show giant bugs being shot, blown up and more, after the human red shirts have been taken out by giant bugs in various horrendous ways. Unfortunately the studio or production company owns the film rights to this title, and keeps cranking out crud hoping to make money off the unwary.

There was also three seasons of an animated version made for TV. Will have to check it out someday, it is supposed to be more true to the Heinlein novel than any of the films

The original was great; I've not seen the sequels, but have heard (and can imagine) that they are crap.

FYI, all three become available on Blu-Ray this week. Hi def bugs!

It is what it is.

Isn't that just a riff of a joke from This Is Spinal Tap?

In the movie, they released an album called "Shark Sandwich", and a review of it appeared in a trade rag reading simply: "S*** sandwich."

But yeah: GTR was, indeed, SHT.

The first one sucked too. Read the book, then watch ALIENS again instead. Or get the CGI animated series, ROUGHNECKS. Still a little off, but closer in spirit to the book. At least the movie got the bugs right.

BTW, best review ever: [www.stardestroyer.net] (NSFW text)

There was a pretty funny review of the Mummy thing in the NY Times.

[movies.nytimes.com]

"The kindest thing to be said for this frantic, cluttered mess of cheesy computer-generated action-adventure clichés is that at least you can see how the estimated $175 million budget (according to the Internet Movie Database) was spent. We get an avalanche, an army of bow-and-arrow-wielding skeletons, a car chase that turns into a fireworks explosion, and a cadre of snowy yetis. In the movie’s futile drive to conjure visceral excitement, the action sequences are edited into an incoherent jumble that makes you feel trapped on a rickety airplane sitting in a pool of yak vomit."

ST is a better movie that it credits for being. Most people who think it sucked invariably compare it to the book, a comparison that is not in line with what the director intended the movie to be.

A movie should be judged on it's own merits, sans the distinction of it's sources. It's either entertaining or it isn't. A movie is rarely as good as a book it's derived from. Though Milos Forman seems to (in my opinion) exceed the source material fairly consistently.

ST movie is better than the book, but that may depend on your philosphical leanings/country of origin.

The director intended the movie to be a direct insult to the book and its author. Which is in large part why it's a giant piece of SHT.

ST was terrific. The second one was a disappointment. The third, which I found on BT, was horrible. My 9 YO said, "Dad, this movie is terrible." which should give you some indication of the quality.

OK, I think I should withdraw my statement about the first movie being better than the book. I think the movie is an excellent satire on jingoism, blind hypernationalistic patriotism, government shaping of the media, etc. I have heard that the book actually celebrates some of those, but as I have not read it, I cannot know for sure. For all I know, it may have been a misunderstoood antecedent to the Ender's Game series.

Given the limitations (producers and financiers who insist on formula) of the modern movie maker, the original ST was a fine tribute to the Heinlein book. The main problem is that the political messages were done a bit too subtly for most people, who interpreted the jingoism as pro-war instead of satire.

Look at the last couple of minutes of the movie when infants are filling in the infantry. The real message of the film is right there.

Heinlein's novel is a coming of age story set in that milieu. A young man, spoiled by affluence, joins the military in a fit of rebelliousness, is tormented and tempered by the experience and eventually becomes not just a man but one who has earned his father's admiration. It's a better read than Hemingway and almost as deep as Maugham.
