Seeking recommendations for a desk lamp
Posted by: kap

Looking for a bright desk lamp with a small footprint to be used at my computer desk. Keep in mind that our home office is also a guest bedroom, hence the lamp should spot light only the desk. Tia

I have a Berenice Lamp on my desk at home.
The green is especially nice.

We had one from IKEA. Halogen is very bright but way too hot.

I'm very fearful these days of any NON-cool touch bulb.

Had an adjustable lamp one day decide to just loosen itself just enough to fall
under its own weight. It came to rest on the keyboard ($100 back then) of my
Mac II -- and melted the corner and warped all near.

Forget worse consequences --- what if that had been a MacBook or MBP??

Therefore, I stay away from lights like the first one - and go for the brighter lights
that can be used from across town.

I don't see the potential problem, unless you were considering using your desk while your guest is sleeping? Depending on how the room is arranged you might want a lamp that will sit on the floor, so it can be used either as a lamp for the desk or a reading lamp near the bed. Don't pass up the chance to get something that will serve more than one purpose!

Only when my brother visiting or my wife falls asleep watching TV while I am in the room using the computer. Your floor lamp is a good idea. However, my computer desk is in the opposite end of the room from where the bed is.

last time I was there Homeys had various CFL type floor and desk lamps for cheap that I would think do the job.
I bought a 27W floor version made by Hampton (which I think is a Homeys sub).
I liked it so much I bought 2 more.
Lots of comfortable light. It is hot, but not like halogen or Edison.

i've used the old fashioned Banker's Lamp for years. I don't consider the footprint very large and i keep a CFL in it so it never gets very hot.

you can find them just about anywhere.

Fritz,
The LED home depot is cool looking. Will stop by Home Depot today. Thanks!

On second look I realized that lamp has an usual LED 'bulb'. How difficult is to find a replacement?

graylocks,
Wife loves those along with the Tiffany style.

I've got a small desk lamp that takes standard incandescent bulbs. I'm using a multi-LED bulb at about 1W. I wish I had bought more of these bulbs from geeks.com when I had the chance.

The LED doesn't have a very wide pattern and the neck of the lamp is pretty short, so I've got it sitting on top of a monitor. Otherwise the lamp is in my way. The light is soft and somewhat cool, similar to my Ott-Light located elsewhere.

I'm always interested in trying LED lamps, but they tend to be really expensive, use dedicated and/or non-replaceable lights, and have a *lot* of them, covering more area than I want.
