That site is clearly a conservative smear machine, as they criticize Obama.

That site is clearly a liberal smear machine, as they criticize McCain.

Probably need to be cautious about drawing too "strong" of a conclusion from this simple analysis but 2/3's (14/21) of the postings from June and July are about ads that the authors of the site think are not "factual" are from McCain or groups advocating for McCain. (I didn't go further back in time than that because there are Clinton ads sprinkled in from May and prior because the Democratic nomination contest was still taking place.) What's also interesting is that almost all of the "inaccurate" ads from McCain (or his supporters) are "inaccurate" statements about Obama whereas most of the (fewer) Obama "inaccurate" ads are said by the authors of the site to be "innacurate" statements Obama (or his supporters) made about himself and not "inaccurate" claims from Obama (or his supporters) about McCain. I don't think there is any doubt that since the McCain camp revamped itself by bringing in Rove proteges - especially Steve Schmidt - that his campaign has become much more negative (and, I would say, much more misleading and deceptive) about Obama than Obama's campaign has been toward McCain. For example, McCain's statement that Obama would rather lose a war to win an election (which is not a big step away from implying Obama is guilty of treason) was so low that the general consensus of the political pundits is that it went too far - many saying they had never heard a presidential candidate stating such a thing about their opponent and many glomming onto the characterization of it as being "scurrilous". So much for McCain's pledge that he would keep his campaign focused on substantive issues and that he would be respectful and take the high road.

But wait, this is a Democratic republic, with elected representatives. How will this be useful between now and election day? Have facts ever played a role in elections?

Facts ?
You mean the real ones or the contrived ones supported by popular belief ?

Yes, but unfortunately not a primary role.

and sadly enough... there are a few books out there (by Paul Boller) written with humor
- true, historical anecdotes about all the presidents...) and his latest was one on
the campaigns -- ALL of them.

If you ever thought anything we've seen in our lifetime was dirty, you'd have to read the
stuff that I read in just this one book.... (the author is a history professor at a good school).

The stuff the candidates and their campaign staff used to fabricate and print was grounds
for DUELING.

I recommend them for everyone, because they are light reading, they can be read
3-4 pages at a time and easily come back to, and they reveal some amazing/disgusting
things about the way "we" do bizness.

"Making laws and sausages.........."

He should have added "and electing a government"

Really an excellent writer.

3 or 4 pages at a time ?
Now that's multi-tasking.
