i ordered a book around 9pm this evening (tuesday). i have Amazon prime which the account noted, and get 2 day shipping. the projected delivery date is next Tuesday, 10/14. shouldn't i be getting this book on Friday? it is listed as being in stock. i know Monday 10/13 is the holiday for commemorating the day native americans found columbus wandering on the beach but is Friday a holiday also?

CHICAGO, June 30. -- Dr. S. C. Stanton, who has charge of the
examination of recruits for the United States regular army in
this city, has caused a sensation among medical men by declaring
that a habitual fast rodier of bicycles or a "scorcher" is
unfit, physically, to serve as a soldier in the army.

He has made this matter the subject of his severest tests in the
examinations of applicants for enlistment, and many men have
been rejected becaue of a "bicycle heart," as the practitioner
terms it, caused by excessive exercise in riding a wheel. The
doctor says: "The persistent scorchring, or fast riding, has a
tendency to enlarge the heart and thus interfere with its proper
action." Few enthusiastic bicyclists can resist the temptation
to 'scorch,' and as a consequence the physician believes that
the heart of a large proportion of this class of riders is more
or less affected.

"This being the case, they would be unable to endure the
hardships that army life imposes and hsould not be permitted
to enter the service. The excitement caused by war is also
attended by deleterious effects effects to those whose hearts
are in any degree affected."

I can see that after awhile I could accumulate many many tv shows that I wouldn't necessarily want to watch very often. I wish itunes had an archive feature for this. As it stands I think I'd have to manually burn a disc from the finder and then delete from itunes? Or is there a better way? Thanks.

ps. sounds like a good job for blueray (or whatever it's called)

I see Toast can make a DVD from a video clip, but it takes a veeeery long time to encode an MP4 clip I made with handbrake. Is there another setting in handbrake that will make the conversion faster? can you export directly to MP2 in handbrake, rather than MP4?

So, son is looking for a Mac mini to hook to his HDtv. I think I might have posted some of these questions before, but, since it's been a while and I don't remember, I am asking again.

What is the difference between core duo and core 2 duo?

What extra accessory do we need to hook this to a tv?

What can I expect to pay for a used mini? I want to buy a newer, better type, but I don't have to have the newest type. We are looking used, but I want to know what a fair price is.

can't even stick a disc into it, nothing shows as being in the drive, the drive shows up normally everywhere, system profiler diagnostics passed, son-of-a....
And it will be a few days before I can even think about taking it into an Apple Store X(

I've tried several things to try to get it working, if anyone has any ideas feel free to post them, maybe I haven't tried them yet.

I hate basements. I hate going down there, being down there and doing laundry down there.

No other choice, in my condo for the laundry.

I have a mental block about the space...it is creepy. It needs more lighting and to be rewired and reconfigured.

The laundry area is laid out wrong and I really need to figure something out. I also need a good closeline down there instead of the crap that was already there.

Because I don't like being down there, it tends to get messy.

Poll: Ponzi scheme or not?

With so many companies paying no dividends (what is the last time AAPL paid dividends?), it makes one wonder if in fact the stock market is nothing else but a legal Ponzi scheme.

Suppose the price of one share would be constant, then the only incentive to own that stock would be the dividends, right? conversely, if the company pays no dividends, then you hope that the price of the share goes up. Cool. You buy today at $1, sell 5 years later for $2. I buy then from you for $2 and sell another 5 years later for $4. What happens when 5 years later when the prices reaches $8 and there is no buyer? the pyramid collapses.

Of course, in real world is not that simple. The value of the company goes up and down based on performance, rumors, if the CEO has cancer or not, or if one moron says the CEO had a heart attack. But when you look at the overall stock market, and average out all these peak and valleys, the picture I painted above becomes more and more realistic. At least that's the way I see it.

I guess the whole goal of the game is to find the today's valleys that will rise to be tomorrow's peaks. In other words, for every gain you make, there will be someone else losing that money.

So what's your view on this?

I made the mistake of going to the SuperTarget this afternoon and they lured me in with some pretty nice 75% off deals. Here's what I got

1. A SimpleTech 160GB USB portable drive for $32.48. Only USB, but it does have a 3-year warranty. They also had a 120GB SimpleTech for $27ish and a 160GB i/o Magic portable drive for less than $30. I went for the SimpleTech because it had a longer warranty than the i/o Magic and it is 5400 RPM where the i/o Magic is 4200 RPM.

2. A 1GB flash drive for $3.74. OK, it is a Disney High School Musical drive, but just for moving smaller files around, I can overlook that. They also had a couple of Hanna Montana ones, but I didn't think I could even get my daughter to use those. The picture is of the 512MB one, but mine is 1GB.

3. A Denali laptop case similar to this one, but a different material, for $6.24. It should fit the MacBook nicely.

4. A Canon MP470 All-In-One for $24.98. I know it takes the more expensive chipped carts, but I bought it mainly for the scanner. I didn't have a scanner that worked with my iMac and I am tired of dragging out one of the old clamshells every time I needed to scan something. I figured for $25 it was worth it. I need to look into how hard it is to refill those carts. Retail was $99.99

I should stay away from Target. :boink:

CBS Investigates More 'Mentalist' Scripts
Six scripts could lead to a back-nine order

CBS has reportedly ordered additional scripts for the freshman drama "The Mentalist."

Given that "The Mentalist" is perhaps the lone asterisk-free freshman hit of the new season, CBS' decision isn't surprising.

According to media reports -- starting at Entertainment Weekly -- the network has requested six additional scripts for the quirky procedural, which features Simon Baker as an ultra-observant crimefighter.

It's expected that it will only be a matter of time before CBS gives a formal back-nine order for "The Mentalist," a reward for a drama that has averaged more than 15 million viewers in its first two Tuesday night airings.

Although their overall viewerships pale in comparison to "The Mentalist," both FOX's "Fringe" and The CW's "90210" have already received back-nine orders.

I swear, first the HD, now I am having some sort of power supply issue.

I thought I had a bad charger so I got a new one, but that did not solve this problem:

The iBook keeps switching between battery and AC power when it is plugged in. Every once in a while, it will switch over to battery power until I jiggle the power cord to get it back on AC.

The battery (like everything else) is on its last leg and I can only get an hour charge out of it (if I'm lucky.)

I am guessing that the problem might be the internal receptacle where the charger plugs into. Is this something I can replace on my own? If so, what is that part called?

I've had an opportunity to converse, perhaps once?? with Chris Stevens, and he has, buried
within the OWC website, a collection of pearls of wisdom that everyone should really read and
take note of. (Just don't ask him the difference between fluorescent orange & fluorescent green!)

This month he writes eloquently, an article here on getting your HD in ship-shape

But way beyond that, is the treasure of his previous articles on a variety of topics, shareware apps,
and a knowledge of what is going on with great value applications and even finding items in the OS
that most people never knew were even there.

I've read a lot of Chris's stuff, and often, not long after, see the same information, BARELY paraphrased
in magazine and web articles....... praise indeed (without the $$ reward!) for his findings
and his writing, which is rare among the vast majority, copied by many writers you'd think were doing
their own work, and clearly are not.

Check out this month's short article - and check out the archives too. I mentioned this once
before, about 2 years ago, and his findings are often real jewels of wisdom. He rarely disappoints.
In a monthly email some might otherwise think a waste of electrons, Chris Steven's article makes it worth its mass in protons! :-D

I need to remove the - January 2008 part only.

Does anyone here know how to create a Macro or VBA script to automate this process? I am thinking that somehow you could use the - as a common point to create a selection, or truncate the text, but I have no idea how to do that.

Poll: Would Playlists for Apps be useful?

Its' just occurred to me that having "Playlists" for Apps would be a real boon. I'm getting ready to travel and, since there is a limit of 9 pages of Apps, it would be great to be able to manage them the same way you manage music. I could have pre-determined lists of Apps and swap them simply by Syncing my iPhone. Perhaps a page (or three) of "core, always loaded Apps, and the ability to quickly swap other "extra" pages in order to keep within the 9 page limit. Anyone at Apple listening????
