USB to RCA cable?
#1
My speakers have RCA connectors (Swan T120s) and instead of connecting from my RCA cables to my headphone jack (through an adapter), I would like to minimize connections. All I can see are generic USB to RCA cables and I am not sure it would work.

Anyone have any experience/knowledge with such a cable? Does the sound quality suffer very much? The speakers are individually amplified, so all they would need is a line level signal from my computer.

Wow! I think I answered my own question. When googling I found this:

http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UFO202.aspx

This has the added bonus of having a line level input as well. My borrow a cassette deck from a relative and save the few tapes I have left to MP3.

Glad we could be of assistance.

That brand is a brand of blatant patent thievery - in nearly everything they produce.

Try this one. http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-MSE-U33HB-So...B00006I5KV or its successors.

Not sure how either of those solutions minimizes connections over this for $0.76: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2

Split the RCA end down the middle to run one cable to each of your speakers.

Unless you get some sort of noise from your internal sound card, there's no reason to get a USB solution for what you need to do. You can use the same cable to run your tape deck in as well.

Maybe I missed something?

Ideally, I want to connect as few things as I can to my MBP, to make it easier to connect/disconnect. If it were always plugged in, I would not care how it looks. If I can avoid using the headphone jack, that is ideal.

I see. That makes sense. However, both of those breakout boxes are pretty pricey for that alone. When I plug my work laptop in at my desk, I have to plug in power, USB, and audio. Not a big deal for me, but we're all different. Good luck with whatever you do.

The more I think about it, then, you'd probably be just fine with one of thos cheap little USB dongles with 3.5mm jacjs going in and out. I used to use one with my mini9 for audio out since I never got the built in jack to work under Leopard. Worked just fine. You should be able to plug one of those into a hub and use a cable like I linked to go to the speakers.

One of these http://www.amazon.com/External-Channel-S...B000N35A0Y

I have used one of those in the past and have had mixed results. The feedback on that item pretty much scared me away: distortion, crackling and lack of dynamic range are not things I like to read in association with an audio product.

I am sticking with the USB box that is on the way already: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002GHBYZ0

The added advantage is that I can connect a tape deck and save some old tapes to MP3.

Thanks for your input. I will let you know how it goes.

Well, that's not so bad. There wasn't a price in your first link, so I assumed it was probably in the same ballpark as what poo listed. Should work just fine. Good luck.
