I took the beast to the Apple Store. Of course in spite of the thing not turning on at Julia's or at my house when i double checked it, it booted up as soon as the tech plugged it in. He thinks it's the power supply which must've jiggled around as i was bringing in the computer. The power supply was the problem last february when i took it in.
The power supply only have a 90 day warranty, but the tech noticed that there were grey streaks on the screen. He said that was a sign of LCD deterioration, which is a known issue and Apple would replace the screen for free. Since the labor would also be free, he said he'd just use that to cover putting in the power supply so that my friend only has to pay for the supply itself, a savings of about $40 over that last trip.
She is finally realizing the usefulness of a back-up. I'm looking for one for her now.
