$75 Refurb Apple TV pushes me off the fence...

Thinking refurb at $49, new at $69

Gotta love the dreamers.

You should write a note to Tim Cook.

Competition, though, may lead it another tiny notch lower in price in next 24 months.

Since Apple sells the remote for $19, I don't see how not including it would drop the price by $50 (unless you were talking about the refurb at $49).

Roughly $50 below the standard $99 retail price, from top price, to bottom price, was what I meant.

Though, unless Apple sees the ATV as a loser and looks for ways to dump it, I don't see Apple doing gray-maket tricks like excluding key accessory (only a minority of users would tolerate trying to set one up without an included remote) and offloading it at giveaway prices. Apple likes money. And the ATV is modestly successful.

I doubt Apple will try to compete on price, but I thought it interesting to speculate how many more ATVs they'd sell at a mythical $49 price point.

The ATV is one of the few Apple products where I think Apple makes very little money on hardware. Instead, a $49 device would have to be subsidized by increased sales of on-demand movies or from services like Netflix.

I also wanted to point out that you really don't need the remote, and that the ATV works great with essentially all modern TV remotes.

with free shipping to your local Apple store for pickup. That was enough to tip the scales for the Apple TV for me.

I'm confused. Weren't you looking for a device that could stream media from folders on a server, instead of through iTunes? Since the Apple TV 3 doesn't really support this option (some apps on iOS might support this and AirPlay), did you change your mind on content streaming with iTunes?

If so, the Apple TV isn't a bad bet at this price. I'd probably prefer the Roku 3 for my needs, but the Apple TV has its strengths.
Yes I was... but since my wife is the primary user of the television it was decided that simpler is better.... so everything will be going into the iTunes library...

Hope everything works well. The Apple TV was decent enough when I used one, as long as you understand its limitations.
