age of empires vs rise of nations

My brother wants to get one of these games. Is one better than the other? He'd be playing it on a new MacBook.

Also, we used to play Warlords all the time (ancient game) which was turn based. Is there any turn based games out there anymore?

My son says for turn based strategy game go for Civilization. AoE is not really turn
based, it's more of a real-time strategy based game. He plays all 4 Civilization
games but says 1&2 are outdated and the interface can be confusing on all of them.
Also check out Avernum games, they are turn based RPG's that have amazing depth,
so he says.

How do the turn based games work if my bro is in AZ and I am in WA? Would we both have to be online at the same time or would the game be "hosted" somewhere?

Thanks for the info.

I've played AoE, it's more like the original Warcraft games in that they are realtime strategy. Very fun though.
Avernum is also fun, although its strengths are based more in the plot/story then the graphics.

Looks like Civilization IV has "Play by email." I don't see that the others have that feature. I'd say Civ IV has the lead although all the reviews say it takes hours to learn.

It takes hours to learn Civ IV?????!!! I'm a bit surprised but I've been playing Civ since the original.

I would have thought that the biggest problem with Civ IV would be its horrendous requirements.

My son said Civ IV is playable online. You would just have to find his user name or
something like that while both of you are online.

Where is the best place to buy civilization iv from? I don't see any options to purchase it and download it, so I assume I'll have to have it shipped.

I believe we bought it for him on sale at Circuit City.
