Thanks, pinkoos, I will be sure to check that. Is there a way to update/reset to 11.1 that will default to a clean install?

Why 11.1?
I'm behind, but I thought it shipped with 11.0. I guess it would update to 11.2...?

Hopefully it didn't come from BestBuy!

My open box M1 Air from BestBuy was fine. They didn't bother to even wipe it off, but other than that it was perfect.

Finally bought a new Mac. First time in 12 years.

M1 Mini, scored for $539 open box. Have yet to fire it up. Also bought an Asus ProArt monitor so I'll have something to look at.

Microcenter deal? I bought an open box from there for that price

Just be careful - the first one I bought was activation locked (previous user didn't clear out his/her iCloud completely when they returned it to MC and MC didn't check apparently)

Luckily, when I went to return it, they had another open box for the same price so I rolled the dice on that one and came up a winner (ie, no activation lock)

It was a bit disconcerting that when I returned the locked one, I told the person that it was locked - seems he didn't care or didn't know what that meant because he just printed out a new MC open box price tag, slapped it on the box and it was back up for sale on their website again within hours
Did they mark it down some more? If you have the receipt from MC showing the serial number Apple should unlock it for you.

No, they didn't mark it down anymore

Before I returned it, I had filled out the Apple form to get it unlocked

However, I returned it in the interim

I did hear back from Apple asking me to upload the proof or purchase - however, I had already done that as the initial step in trying to get Apple to unlock it

Regardless, I had already returned it so I didn't pursue the matter though I was perturbed that Apple asked for something (a copy of the proof of purchase) that I had already given them

Years ago, I bought something off the MicroCenter discount table that didn't work at all. Returned it and it was back out on the discount table the next time I went. Overall, I like MC but they should stop this behavior.

I've bought many an open box from BB with no problems. They've stepped their game up over the last few years.

...

Why not BB? (It wasn't.)
My own bad experiences with BB selling used as "open box".
