My PBX phone system as an input for music-on-hold. For the last few years, I've been using a cheap portable walkman-style cd player set to loop endlessly with an A/C adapter to function as music on hold. The CD player is on its last legs from being run 24/7 for years.
I'd like to replace it with a cheap MP3 player, like a 1st gen iPod Shuffle or similar.
My only concern is that it needs to be able to be plugged in as to not kill batteries every few days.
ideas?

this should work

i read an article years ago about a DJ that did this for restaurant music
he had ipods filled with custom playlists that the owners just set it to and then let it go -- dinner, lunch, sunday brunch, etc and would come by once a month or so and change it out with more current music or whatever

Instead of music, I'm hearing more and more advertising and weather.
Kinda odd when it's the local weather for 3,000 miles away.

That's how I'm doing my music on hold here at the office. Mine has an audio (mono) plug-in port, so I took out the old recording-on-a-chip system, and replaced it with a refurb Aluminum iPod Nano 2GB. I loaded it up as much as it could hold, put it on shuffle forever, plugged in the audio cable, the power cable (had to buy the wall adapter usb power thingie), and hit play. I check on it every so often, and it's still going...
Reminds me, I should go check it now... Yep, still playing! Phil Collins, Easy Lover.
You'll want to get the audio level set just right. So, you'll need to call in and put yourself on hold. Listen to how it sounds over the phone, and turn up or turn down the audio until it's good.

Be careful about what you use for hold music. If you don't own the rights, you could run afoul of the RIAA for re-broadcasting. Seriously. I'm currently just playing the local NPR station, but even that isn't 100% legal. I plan to eventually make some music using Garage Band, or maybe even use some Creative Commons music.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't even think of that. Grrr...
