USB over ethernet?
#1
I want to connect a USB printer to a computer in another room. The rooms are connected via ethernet. I see there are USB to ethernet adapters, but I'm not sure they'll do what I need. I just want to go from USB, to ethernet (through the wall) then back to USB on the other side. I know I can get USB keystones but they're about as expensive as a print server. Plus I'd have to get one of those powered cables.

Anyone know of a way to do this?

Thanks.

USB to ethernet is for using USB as your network connection (ie. like the USB port on a cable modem). Other than trying to push the limit by using two really long USB cables and a powered hub in the middle, I do not know a cheap/reliable way to do it with ethernet other than a printserver.

If it has a parallel port, I saw two $10 printservers on the SeaTac Craigslist....

It's USB only. I know I can get a USB extension cable that's powered, but then I have to buy two USB keystones @ $10ea. I know there's a networked version of my printer, I wonder if I can upgrade it (HP LJ 1200.)

The only mention I've found is this: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardwa...erjet1200/
"network ready - Optional"

They do exist but is it built-in or an optional card. I'd check out the HP site, and if it is a card, find one.

ebay auction description says "module"

Sounds like you are wanting to use these types: http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-lan-0101.html

...they work great. You can find them much cheaper...just look around. Even if you get a cheap set that only pushes USB 1.1, that is plenty enough for your print jobs.

Can't you just use an external jetdirect ex: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=jetdirect+ex&category0=

Looks like the diffrence between the 1200 and 1200n is the inclusion of a "HP Jetdirect 175X print server." They go for around $60 on ebay.

But that jetdirect looks like an inexpensive solution. I'll look into that more, and the USB thing too. Thanks guys.
