Recommended dual-layer DVD brand for macbook? Memorex should be called "coasterex" :)
#1
So, for the first time ever I have been trying to burn dual layer DVD-Rs in my core 2 duo blackbook, and I keep getting errors during the burn process every time.

Tivo finally turned on its TivotoGo feature for the Tivo HD, and I have been transferring various hi-def programs to my laptop. For the ones that are 8.5 gigs or lower, I want to archive the file onto a DVD-R (just back up the file, not make a DVD) for posterity. Stuff like hi-def concerts, awards shows, etc.

I bought some memorex brand dual-layer DVD+R discs at Best Buy, but when I try burning a file in Toast 8.01, it gives me an error about halfway through. I forgot to do a screenshot but some kind of hardware error 44 I think.

Trying it with a 2nd disc produced the same result. Also, I was able to successfully copy and paste the huge file within the finder, so the data seems to be robust.

Is this a mismatch between the macbook's burner and that particular brand? Would there be a better brand to try? I googled around but did not find super definitive answers.

Thanks in advance.....

Try DVD2OneX, works every time. No noticable quality loss and you can use cheaper single sided disks.

Unfortunately DVD2OneX would not be appropriate because I don't actually want to burn a playable DVD from these files, I just want to back up the .tivo data file.

By doing this, I can keep the 1080i hi-def resolution of the recording intact, and watch the file on my computer (by copying the .tivo file back) or on my TV set (by copying the file back to the Tivo's hard drive).

If I were to just make a DVD of the file, it would dumb down the resolution of the file to 480P.

All of the details of the tivo files were probably overkill and for that I apologize, my main issue is that the memorex brand discs don't seem to make it through the process of burning one big 7-8 gig file, on my macbook core 2 duo.

Not all media of a particular company has the same rating, and there can be wide variation in the products of some companies. Generally Verbatim media gets high ratings across the board.

Verbatim, maybe try Ritek.

Also, try setting for a slower burn speed.
