Hi, I got a cable signal booster just to make sure I don't have problems with the signal on my cable modem. I understand it is supposed to boost the "signal", many people use when they have poor picture on their TV. So it clearly amplifies the incoming ("download") signal. Does it also amplify the outgoing signal ("upload")

yeah, I would imagine. it won't actually speed up.anything UNLESS poor signal quality was causing it to have to repeat packets that were reported lost as part of the error-correction protocols.
But your upload speed is probably always going to be about 1/10th or even less of your download speed. They throttle it so you won't use a cable modem as a web server portal.

Yeah, I know it won't speed up anything, but I had a few times dropped packets, as much as 10-25% (depending on when I did the test). They changed some cabling and now it's much better, 2-3%, but still I want to make sure it's not a weak signal. The cable modem says I have a good signal, but I figured a booster cannot hurt.

The vast majority of amplifiers are one direction only but I am not positive about cable amplifiers.
Since you are paying a higher price for monthly service, the cable company usually makes sure you have a good connection. If you live in a large apartment complex, it can be problematic. Whenever someone new moves in, the cretins that Comcast sends to do the installation always seem to screw something up with my connection.

Make sure the operating range (MHz, GHz etc) of the device at least spans the incoming signal range. Some of the older amplifiers don't extend into the frequency ranges now being used.

A friend of mine was too close to the main area hub, and his signal was too strong. It was creating problems with upstream since the strong signal was "bouncing" back. The had to modulate the signal down-to get it to work well both up and down.
I have no idea if the booster might act like this---but it might.

I have a booster at my house, installed by Comcast, but my signal is split (as yours should be). The house video is one leg, with the booster on it, and the cable modem is on its own leg, and is unboosted (with a filter, to prevent backfeeding of the stronger signal). Too much signal strength is just as bad as too little for your cable modem.

yep, I installed the booster and the cable modem does NOT work. the TV works. I put it before the splitter, after, nada.
it's going back.
