No HDMI output...what's next best?
#1
My older DVD player has no HDMI output to use for my 32"LCD TV. What's best from the remaining choices: S-Video, Component (3 cables) or Optical?

I'm currently using the 1-cable composite, so we're not living up to our potential....

Component for video and optical for audio.

What Stavs said.

Since it is an analog signal, cables can make a difference. Start with the $5 ones and see if it looks okay.

There is pretty much no difference between digital coaxial and optical for audio, assuming short distances. Optical is great because it is impervious to electromagnetic interference unlike coaxial, but a decent shielded coax cable will be just as good as optical, especially if we are dealing with all digital surround sound signals. Optical does have the vulnerability of dust and scratches on the optics, but no connection is perfect.

Why not spend $50 on a newer DVD player, with HDMI out?

buy.com has generic brands for under $50, and name brand ones starting around $60. SVHS and Compnent are both limited to 720x480 res

I would have recommended coax if he had coax. I too prefer it...optical seems too fragile to me. Coax is rare these days, as it seems to be only be on higher end stuff lately (except for my Popcorn Hour).
