250K without power in Wash. as flood worries rise

SEATTLE (AP) — A powerful Pacific Northwest storm knocked out power to about 250,000 electric customers around Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia after it coated much of Washington in ice and swelled Oregon rivers, killing a child and two adults. Besides the outages, the big concern now is more flooding in both states with warmer temperatures and rain.

Most of those affected are customers of Puget Sound Energy, which said it had restored service to 87,000 customers who lost power in the snowstorm that began Wednesday. But the utility it could take into the weekend or later to get the power back on for the roughly quarter million additional homes and businesses still in the dark.

The National Weather Service said warming temperatures Friday should melt snow and ice in Western Washington lowlands as the forecast returns to normal — rain — into next week. Forecasters said the melting snow could cause urban and small stream flooding and fill the Skokomish and Chehalis rivers above flood stage by Saturday evening.

It was still snowing in the Cascades, with up to 2 feet possible in the mountains over the weekend. In Eastern Washington, forecasters expect more snow Friday or freezing rain before warming temperatures on Saturday raise the snow level above the valley floors in some areas.

Thanks for checking in Rudie. We haven't lost power and could drive in our neighborhood as of this morning. Most of the outages are in south King, Pierce, and Thurston counties. Won't be a pleasant weekend for those affected, that's for sure.
I'll be glad to see my son return to school on Monday, he's been out all week.

My sympathy to those affected. Snow is nice, but when you feet two feet or more at once it starts to lose its charm.

East side of washington here. We got about 8 to 9 inches over the course of two days. School canceled thursday and friday. Haven't seen a plow yet. Main roads aren't bad but the others are treacherous depending on the vehicle. My solara is like a sled. If I can get it rolling I just don't stop. My wife's yukon doesn't even know there is snow on the ground.

Hopefully those that have lost power will get it back soon.

I've got cabin fever. Not exactly snowed in, but virtually immobilized by the weather for three days, with 5-6 inches of frozen snow in our neighborhood. Quiet streets, too! We can walk to get coffee or sightsee, but better to leave our cars stationary.

We stocked up on food and supplies Saturday morning (stores were crowded, everyone had the same idea) so it's been cozy here. Plenty of hot cocoa, soup, sandwiches, pasta, lots of TV, and internet surfing. We had flickering power yesterday. I held my breath. So far, so good.

Let the slush-fest begin! It's 40 degrees and raining. In the next 48 hours, hopefully most of the snow will clear out.
