Updated Firefox and got this mess

Problem solved.

It had occurred to me that it might be an odd font problem, so I just did what I was too tired to do last night: I ran a font and system/app font cache cleanup through FontExplorer X Pro, and that seems to have done the trick. I was able to revert to my original profile and got back my bookmarks, etc.

Weird that it only cropped up after updating Firefox and didn't affect anything else. Firefox was fine last night before I applied the update.
