Why doesn’t Apple support multi stream transport for external monitors?
#1
If they did, the M1 Macs would support three monitors out of the box.

Anyone know why Apple is ignoring this nice tech tool?

Apple hasn't supported anything Displayport ever. Never. Other than using the port type they never supported any of its features.

I think there are adapters for DisplayPort. I've seen videos with M1 Macs running 6 monitors.

I wonder if its supported by Mac hardware, setting aside driver concerns.

My understanding is that this is tech in the DisplayPort standard. Means standard usb c hubs allows multiple external monitors on PCs. Apple doesn’t support it.

Display Link is related technology but requires additional hardware and drivers. It does work with even the M1 Macs.

Per the Wikipedia, MST is part of the DisplayPort 1.3 standard circa 2014. Thunderbolt 3 was supposed to include DisplayPort 1.3 capability, but the final release shipped with version 1.2.

So, it's a limitation of the Thunderbolt spec.

Blame Intel.
