Apple Store Refurbs: $20 Makes a Big Difference
#1
as comaplate previously noted http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/379...msg-379272 Look very closely at the product spec pages. Some seem to include iLife '08, some don't.

$479 Refurb Mini Core Duo 1.83 SD w/ iLife '06

$499 Refurb Mini Core 2 Duo 1.83 Combo w/ iLife '08

As far as the Mini goes, seems like a no brainer. Still, the refurb pricing is very strange ::o

I still want to know if a low end (like core solo) could handle the heat of a Core2Extreme.

If one of those could be found on CraigsList for a bargain, it might make one hell of a server.

Recalling from previous tests and reading, it would equal the performance of a dual core Xeon (roughly) - at the same clock.

They seem to come in, core for core, at about 50% ---- which when you consider it compared to any G4 set-up, is really quite significant.

Pan,

You'll get ilife '08 but you'll purchase a machine with a combo drive instead of a superdrive. I'd rather have the superdrive. It's not an even trade, at least not for me.

Like I replied to the previous thread where you asked the question, Intel has not made an Extreme processor in the Socket M format. To expand a little more, if there is a Core 2 Duo Extreme made with the 45 nm Penryn process in Socket M, it technically should work in a mini because it conforms to the spec for the socket. If it did run too hot, the advanced Speedstep function would throttle the clock speed down until it was cool enough.

Riiiight... buy a $200 used mini, add a $800 Core 2 Extreme processor and a $200 2.5" drive, and it might even outperform a NAS that cost quarter as much. Big Grin

If the superdrive is more important to you than getting a Core 2 Duo CPU & a full gig of RAM {vs CoreDuo & 512MB}, I'd say go for it. I've got a FW DVR-109 & FW Samsung 182 for DVD burning. I would guess many forum members also have FW DVD burners too.

The iLife '08 is just extra gravy on the plate Smile-D

Ah,

Didn't notice the core 2 duo. That'll definitely be worth it. Smile
