Gmail: Older Version vs Newer Version. what's the difference?

I don't see any. And my wife's acocunt does not have a "newer version"

One has CHAT on the side, the other doesn't.

I'm not able to select the new one (2 keeps changing to 1).

But I've always had chat on the side...

hmmm. I have chat in both. I really don't see any difference

The only difference I can tell is that the 'More Actions' drop down menus are different from one another. In the old version, some items are greyed out until you put a checkmark next to an email. In the new version, if an email is not checked the greyed out items don't show at all.
