NFL move to 17 game regular season

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/3116...eason-2021

NFL owners approved the expansion of the regular season to 17 games Tuesday, a long-expected decision that will generate additional revenue for the country's richest sports league.

Players agreed to the additional game as part of their 2020 collective bargaining agreement, which gave the league an option to expand as soon as the 2021 season. The preseason will be reduced from four games to three to maintain compliance with the CBA, which limits the total number of preseason and regular-season games played to 20.

There will remain one bye week per team. The season will begin on Thursday night, Sept. 9, and will end on Jan. 9, 2022. The Pro Bowl will be played on Feb. 6, 2022, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles has been pushed back one week, from Feb. 6 to Feb. 13, 2022.

Super Bowl needs to be the end of January or no later than the first week in February. Going to the second week makes the season too long. Guess I get football fatigue sooner than the moneychangers at the NFL

One extra week of high stakes gambling pays a lot of bills.

Friggin' Trump's greedy influence on the NFL, after they wouldn't let him into the owner's club and he spent million$ suing the NFL to win $3 (actually $1, which was trebled, plus a few pennies interest), but the NFL's focus on greed has become everlasting. Frankly, I'd rather they roll the regular season back to 14 games, and figure out some way to enhance the playoffs; maybe cross-pollinate the wild cards, and play thru from there. Best NFC Wild Card plays 4th best AFC Div Winner, worst NFC Wild Card plays 3rd best AFC Div Winner, and vice-versa for other conference setup. Wild Card game winners play out balance of playoffs in conference of the Division winner that appeared in that Wild Card game...

How about a playoff with all the teams to see which one gets into the Super Bowl to play whichever one has Tom Brady as quarterback.

That'll only work for another ten years, or so....

There was a lot of greed going on a long, long, time before "Friggin Trump"...

The odd number of games makes me uneasy. Make it 18 with 2 bye weeks and no preseason.

Edit: Actually reading my post shows how absurd 18 games is. As is 17.

After the NFL squashed the USFL, the NFL started to really cater to the corporate and TV money, essentially abandoning the everyday fan on the street that had been supporting the league up until then.
