Mississippi's last abortion clinic will be forced to close
#1
Based on the law just signed by Gov. Bryant, which says that the clinic has to be staffed only by board certified OB/gyn's with admitting privileges at local hospitals. Of the 3 physicians working at Mississippi's last remaining abortion clinic, only one has local privileges. The other two on staff are board certified but can't get local privileges because they live out of state, due to threats and harassment. The clinic cannot function with only one doctor, so it will close if it can't get this law thrown out.

The current lack of admitting privileges by the two doctors does not interfere with their ability to treat patients appropriately. They can either have other doctors make the referral, or if it's an emergency, then ER docs do the admitting.

This is the poorest state in the nation, with the highest teen pregnancy rate, and with women least likely to be able to afford to travel out of state to receive this legal medical service.

That's how you outlaw abortion when you can't overturn Roe v. Wade. Bit by bit, and allow the harassment to go unchecked.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but is an 'abortion clinic' the only place where a woman can obtain a (medical) abortion ?

Hospitals, but as I understand it that is very difficult in Mississippi, with most hospitals not offering that. In fact hospitals have been behind the push not to give doctors providing abortions admitting privileges.

MS has one Planned Parenthood clinic but they do not offer abortion.

Here's what is ironic. More women die in childbirth than from abortions (10 times more.) Abortion is a medically safe procedure and has been for a long time, in fact it is the safest surgical procedure for women. But in Mississippi, doctors delivering babies are not legally required to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. In fact, they don't even have to be board certified.

These days pretty much so in many areas of the country. Hospitals will do them as an emergency procedure connected with other urgent medical conditions, but most do not as a routine, elective procedure.

silly liberal, it's not about saving women but about controlling women's choices.

This is as close to Jim Crow laws as one can get. Sadly, we don't have the moral backbone and a federal government to step in and deal with it.

Some women poison themselves to induce a miscarriage and then drag themselves to the hospital when they have uncontrollable bleeding. If its a choice between the life of the woman and the perpetuation of her zygote then the doctors might help. But note that Mississippi also has a religious refusal law that allows doctors to bow out and let the woman die in that situation.

Is that really true?
