Effect of piracy on the environment
#1
Well, it doesn't have to be piracy but I was just thinking about how with digital downloads of products with no associated physical packaging there is almost no impact on the environment. No paper, no plastic, no fuel used to deliver it. Of course it does take energy to download it, but almost nothing.

Not condoning piracy here, but I wonder how much less trash there is now because of all the stuff that has been digitally distributed.

True. Anymore, it's easier to pirate apps than it is to buy them. I bought one copy of CS3 online and downloaded it. It's java downloader was slow, and didn't work at first.

If you're gonna pat yourself on the back for avoiding CD in your music, you'd better curse yourself for creating burned discs.

I don't follow your logic Hal. I buy about 90% of my music online now for this very reason, and I have no reason to burn a CD of it... That's what the iPod is for!

Are you thinking along different lines?

I much prefer to buy my stuff right out of the store. But most software for Macintoshes aren't in stores. I want a BOX and a MANUAL for my UMPTEEN dollars. Unlike john-o, I've never paid for a download except for Rickie Lee Jones cuz she sells it right on her website. I buy music from Ameoba and Rasputin. I know those guys.

I don't mind buying music online, as long as I get some digital booklet with it. I really don't need more CD jewel cases sitting around, and it's not like I ever actually use the CD's anymore. Once I've imported them into iTunes that's pretty much the last time I see them. So for me that's a space saver.

When it comes to software, I do enjoy a good manual from time to time, so if it's an app that I know I want to learn and be able to use well then it's worth getting the box. Of course you can get a PDF and print out the stuff you want to read on paper, but that should warrant some kind of a discount.

How often do you actually get a printed manual anymore with you software? Anything I have purchased recently has had the manual as a PDF on the CD. The little booklet I got with CS3 hardly counts as a manual.

Finally, some hard evidence.

Looks like we need to get back on the pro-piracy wagon soon or all those polar bears are toast!
