I always thought it was fear. Like homosexuality could be caught or something. But see, I always figured they were afraid it was catching because they secretly found it appealing. I think if you are secure in your heterosexuality it wouldn't occur to you to worry about that.
I don't think it's hidden appeal or lack of security in one's sexual identity. It's not wanting to be one of "those" people. A fear that some switch will flip and they'll be one of those people. The strident haters don't tend to believe one is born homosexual. They attribute it to factors that they themselves are susceptible to. No doubt some have repressed interests. Others just need someone to hate.
