Gmail: Older Version vs Newer Version. what's the difference?

The only difference I can tell is that the 'More Actions' drop down menus are different from one another. In the old version, some items are greyed out until you put a checkmark next to an email. In the new version, if an email is not checked the greyed out items don't show at all.
