Suzanne, this is a common problem with recent Mac laptops. Typically an app with its own volume override like VLC will go loud enough, but not much of Youtube.

Part of the problem is the floor she's on. Miking tap is not easy and a raised wood floor is best, which obviously they weren't going to take the time to do.

Tap is a basic form that all dancers and musicians should have some experience with, if not proficiency. Certainly not "outdated".
