has gun ownership been a successful defense against this problem?

Are you kidding?

It's why God invented .357 Magnums and shot shells.

Rock salt reloads... Always popular to people in the south. Not fatal, won't break up your house, but the painful instant acne is a deterrent.

My favorite side by side "home defense" shotgun load was bird shot in the right barrel, and a slug in the left barrel. And more slugs in my pocket. And I only ever carried it once when someone burned a cross in our back yard. The guns haven't been out of the safe for almost a decade.

They do eat stink bugs, though. A bit of a silver lining….

You don't need to be an NRA member to own a gun, though they might like you to think so. No license either for most shotguns (as long as it isn't a 4+ round semi-auto).

What?

Background check is required regardless of capacity. And there is no different requirement for single shot, pump or semi-auto regardless of capacity. One can buy a 15 round shotgun no differently than a single shot.

If a shotgun is used for hunting, some states limit overall capacity. Has no impact on purchase requirements.

In Illinois you are required to have a FOID (firearm owner identification) card and the shotgun is limited to 3 shells (a plug must be inserted that limits the number of shells to 3). You go through the same background check and 3 day waiting period as you would if buying an AR-15 or handgun.

I've used shot rounds (from a .44 Mag... all I had shot rounds for...) on spiders before.
But, they were WAY bigger than that spider. AND the little bastard was camped out in a web big enough that our shortest friend was in genuine danger of becoming a meal - and the web was right outside the outhouse at my buddy's cabin.
We could not allow that situation to stand. It was him, or us being able to pee in peace.

The plug is usually a fish and game requirement, not a state requirement. Which is why the plug can be removed.
