as I said, economical and sporty... maybe an impossibility, but I thought I'd try. I was actually thinking about a used Beemer or something else like a honda, but I didn't want to pay as much as if I bought a new car. A mid-life crisis car would be fine if I could afford it. Truthfully, I miss my first car, a 69 Firebird.
BTW, an absolute 'No' on the PT Cruiser. I have had a great time with my Dodge Dakota, but it's time to get out of the truck and into a car.
wms out.

How about a new Corolla S starts at $16K or a Scion tC for $18K pretty much loaded even has a
panoramic sunroof. A guy I know bought a very nice used beemer 3 series for under $20K.

If you want to stay away from a mid-life crisis appearing convertible that are alternatives to BMW (if you decide not to go that way) you could consider a used Chrysler Sebring Convertible - nice design but probably not very fuel efficient or one of the most reliable cars out there. A Camry Solara convertible is likely to be more reliable but I'm not crazy about the styling, though a lot of people probably like it.
I say screw being concerned about mid-life crisis image and go with a used Miata. You should be able to get a nice low milage used one in your price range. They are very reliable, get about 22 - 27 mpg (depending how much you punch it) and more fun to drive that just about any car in that price range. I have one and I love it.

If you're going with a convertible I agree with Ted, I think the later Miata's look great.

Whatever you get, drive it, ride in passenger seat and back seat. I have a 2006 Toyota Camry company car, and would not buy one of those with my own money! Just too uncomfortable for me; wife says the same riding in the passenger seat. I'm 6'2", 200 lbs, she is 5'2" and small. Neither of us like it for lack of space and comfort. We will probably get a Mercedes Benz next, or at least give them a very serious look.

I second the Sebring. Shopping for a used car should involve thinking about cars that do not hold resale value so you get more bang for your buck at somebody else's expense. BMW's, Mercedes and particularly Toyotas do not fit that. Nissan and Mazda might and they have some nice cars. Hyundai is building better cars and yet have poor resale. If you can live with Ford products or GM their resale is not that outstanding. Pontiacs and Buicks are great cars IMHO. Chrysler resale sucks and can put you in a luxury car for cheap. A Lincoln might be good too. The AWD small one is the same as a Jaguar.
The new car sounds good too. If you are financing, the interest rate on used cars is a btch compared to the new bargain rate interests used as incentive. Now is a great time too for new because the dealers cannot get them off the lot.

Any feelings on which year Miata... anyone?
How about the Pontiac G6?
Just curious.
