‘ A look at the laws that govern urban warfare in Gaza and beyond ‘
#21
You cannot compare the activities of a terrorist group that needs to be eliminated with those of a democratic state that needs to be preserved. Measuring them with the same parameters, differentiating only on "who started it first" is counterproductive and defeats the premise from the previous sentence. Looking back at 3000 years of history is also ridiculous, there were so many movements of so many peoples around the world that many geographic areas could be claimed by many different players, depending on the time period you choose (as was the most recently case in the Balkans). Also, the norms of behavior have changed significantly over time.

So, what should Israel do instead of exacting vengeance while killing enormous numbers of civilians?
1. Focus on defense of the border with Gaza, so that October 7 can never be repeated
2. Slowly, over time, eliminate terrorist leaders and cells when it is not expected
3. Separate Hamas from political support
https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/01/opinions/...index.html
4. Stop colonization of West Bank

The US should support all defensive activities, providing surveillance equipment, intelligence information, and Iron Dome components. But not any offensive weapons until the onslaught on civilians is halted and guaranteed not to happen again. Unfortunately, US itself is not too concerned with civilians if they are set on eliminating a high-value enemy leader, as some drone attacks have demonstrated in the past. But supporting onslaught at this level is untenable.

I wonder what could have happened if they chose Argentina instead of Palestine.

Theodor Herzl, a Hungarian-born Jew, is considered the father of political Zionism. His 1896 pamphlet, "The Jewish State," set forth the framework for establishing a Jewish nation. "No one can deny the gravity of the situation of the Jews," wrote Herzl. "Wherever they live in perceptible numbers, they are more or less persecuted." In this essay, Herzl indicated that there were two territories being considered for the location of the Jewish state -- Palestine and Argentina. "Shall we choose Palestine or Argentine?" asked Herzl. "We shall take what is given us." (Jewish Virtual Library)

Israeli soldiers have entered Gaza City after completing an encirclement of the urban area home to the main force of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, but will now face an array of challenges fighting in the dense city.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari said after encircling Gaza City, naval ships and aircraft are now assisting infantry and armor to strike command and control centers, rocket launch sites and other Hamas infrastructure.

Hagari said combat engineers are also working towards “demolishing and neutralizing” explosives and other hazards to allow troops to move more freely in the area.

“Our forces are killing terrorists in close combat, in any place in which fighting is required, even if it is difficult, the IDF and its soldiers have the upper hand,” he said at a press briefing on Thursday.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said earlier Thursday in a statement on television that Israeli forces were operating in the heart of Gaza City and were fighting “face-to-face battles.”

“These forces are fighting in an urban, tight area,” he said. “It requires professional fighting and lots of courage.”

The world wide empathy and good-will extended to the US following 9/11 took literally years and hundreds of thousands dead to dissipate, seems Bibi is intent on duplicating a somewhat similar dissipation of good will and empathy within a month.

Have any suggestions for getting the 240 hostages back, eliminating the murderous Islamic terror group and providing shelter for the Gazans who aren't allowed into Hamas tunnels?
