What can be done to secure firearms and prevent them getting into the hands of children with out unduly impinging on 2nd amendment rights. More guns equals more homicides compared to any other developed nation, how do we change this. Too many people are dying. FYI, I learned to shoot as a cadet and was proud of the fact that I could strip and reassemble my rifle blindfolded. I'll never forget the instructors two golden rules, assume all guns are loaded and never point a gun at a person unless you intend to kill them. Some things live with you forever. I understand. And I think what Hal says might be true. At the same time, I think the populace needs to be armed. I know it's a cop out, but I think the problem goes deeper than gun availability. I think our society is sick. Look at how many of those children who die commit suicide. Substance abuse, neglect, etc. It's not easy stuff. kj.

If you think the population needs to be armed explain why and how this can continue yet at the same time how can the carnage be reduced. The pile of dead bodies is mounting.

Society MUST be armed even if a few innocent children must die now and then - sorry, I'm not on board with this one...

Don't even think about using that "freedom" BS argument out either...many of those unarmed nations are arguably freer than our own. The whole "right to bear arms" concept is an anachronism from the era of muskets and cannons derived from the threats the US colonial powers felt from England.

I don't know that this can be discussed in a way that benefits anyone, but this is a violent world. Being weak is not that same as being peaceful. I think anyone who thinks we'll never need guns/weapons is naive. I'll point at all of history as proof. Weakness does not work. What if _you_ decided to go to gun shows with a poster of every child who has been killed this year by guns, and said essentially, "I want people to be able to have guns, but if you don't handle them safely, bad things happen." Why don't more people care enough to actually do something? Why does it have to be the government? Why does it have to be so drastic as a complete disarmament? Hal, I don't think anyone should have to die. But we make those choices every day. Cars kill a lot of people. We don't need to have cars (again, ask Black). Every day you get into your car, you are making the choice of taking a chance of seriously hurting or killing someone. You decide it's worth it. That's how it is. kj.

It's a good thing cars are designed with safety features like brakes and seat-belts & airbags, etc. How many guns are designed to reduce their lethality? Or is it the opposite? Hollow point bullets to increase the damage done? Very bad choice. False equivalence & all that.
