Really ? Every tried to prove you are who you are to the Federal Government ? Cart your passport around with you ?

Of course all your 'private' data is already out there. I once jokingly told someone at work that I didn't need his SS#, I'd just google it. And did while he was standing there. And there it was. We were both astonished, and he went off to lock up his identity.

Certainly. Everyone gets care no matter who they are.

Ah.. you have *not* dealt with the federal gummint. They want to know.. everything. There is massive data collection, fraud detection, yadda yadda. Which actually helps the single payer health insurance (Medicaire, Medicaid) detect fraud... there's ginormous amounts of it.

I have refused to give my SSN to my doctor (not my current one, who has never asked for it... we're talking maybe 5 years ago). The receptionist tried to claim that I had to give it to her. I told her she was wrong. She went back and talked to someone... not sure who, but came out and said I was right, that I did not have to give it to them. My health insurance company used to use it as your id number, but they changed that over 10 years ago.

Got a "you are approved for a credit card" from Capital One and before I shredded it I noticed that you could "opt out" of further mailers. Dialed the phone number and first thing they wanted was my SSN. Banks rule!
