Might as well write this one off. I should have checked before posting. Sorry.

$89 and OOS.

How does that compare to an SSD? I've got an SD port in the mini..

Dead or not, that boggles my mind when I think of paying about 5x that amount for 128MB (MEGAbyte) CompactFlash cards several years ago.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Well, not exactly, as I never bought a CF card anywhere near that big.

How does that compare to an SSD?

I'm guessing an SSD would be a few magnitudes faster.

I put Lion on a 16G USB thumb drive, and it was sooooo sloooooww. I can't imagine a faster USB stick would have given anything near an acceptable speed.

It's an interesting question. The SD slot interface in the Mini is supposedly ePCI so would not likely be a bottleneck.

SSD transfer rates are typically in excess of 200 MB/sec.

I've tried SSD booting via USB2 and it's quite bearable-- faster experience than HDD booting for basic operation (without trying to move large files around.) USB2 max transfer speed is 60 Megabytes per second.

Max transfer rate of a class 10 SD card is 10 MB/sec.

So final answer-- try it and report back please :-)
