NHL referee fired over "makeup" penalty
#1
The NHL fired referee Tim Peel on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after his remark about a penalty call in the Detroit Red Wings game against Nashville was caught on a hot mic.

Peel was heard saying he planned on calling a penalty against the Predators, apparently regardless if it was warranted.

League claimed it was to "uphold" the integrity of the sport. Ever heard anything more hypocritical. makeup penalties and fouls in the NHL and NBA have been part of the game since the beginning - the real offence was getting caught saying it.

Indeed.

Reading the subject line, I thought this might be about a something that wasn't a foul but should be so the ref made up a foul –

'Intentional meanness of spirit, utter lack of sportsmanship, no sense of fair play!'

Ten days in the penalty box, no credit for time served!

I can dream...

How remarkable that the one and only time any ref did this, they got caught!

And here I was thinking (s)he had applied too much rouge and triggered the players to fight as they mistook it for blood.

This! This, this, this. Suspend him, dock his pay, make him sharpen the players skates. Fire him? Yeesh...

Yeah, it could have docked him, sent him to a re-education camp, etc. But sacking him is too ridiculous.

The old joke is that in Washington D.C., a gaffe is defined not as getting caught telling a lie, but getting caught accidentally telling the truth.

Seems to me that this was a gaffe.

That's a foul (sic). They "reduced" the integrity of the league by just firing him without hearing him out.
