[quote WHiiP][quote RgrF]kj, being a cheap sob can cost you more than you think. Forget a demo - get DiskWarrior. Once you have the up to date version burn it and send me a copy.
I think you forgot your smiley . . . or, did you????
Only if he doesn't send the ss# with it.

Kudos for not using the word "hosed"
Bravo!
Messed up sounds plenty descriptive, and doesn't involve any pipes, hoses, or garden equipment.

Last time I checked you can purchase DW from Alsoft and get it immediately via download, and then they send you the physical CD in the mail.

Some people buy things for the people they love, others do work for them... rog takes dumps on them. It's that "language of love" thing.
I've been using osx since 10.2.3, and not had any problem with disks, so I'm not sure I want to spend 100.00 on diskwarrior. Especially when I have 2 backups. I just wish I knew what caused the corruption. This morning the messed up drive started up and disk utility found nothing wrong with it. Maybe it is the drive? I guess it's something I'll just have to figure out on my own. Thanks, kj.

tough love: get DW and quit whining. Every serious mac user should have it.
One bad corrupt file can do this. An app crashing can corrupt a pref file and can then mess with your system. These corrupt files might be on your backup too.
then there are the directories...
Disk utility is useless - the command line thing runs the same app without a user interface - no help...
get DW, fix the directories then run the file check... then get back to feeling good...

I think a lot of you must have a lot more money than I do.
I asked whether fixing it with DW REALLY fixes it, long-term. If not, I might as well just install everything again.
And I asked if it's likely the backup also has corrupt files. Thanks hal for at least addressing that.
Sorry, I don't just spend money willy-nilly, and neither do you guys, so knock it off. kj.

Quit yer whining. Money is tight for most of us these days. That's why I don't own a Wii. But I do own the latest DiskWarrior. I know how to prioritize.

Yes, it does... assuming that it reports that it fixes something, that thing is almost certainly well and truly fixed.
> long-term...
What does that mean?
If you're crashing or there's a misbehaving app or a hardware-issue causing directory-corruption then nothing is going to "fix" it beyond their capacity to damage it all over again.
All hard drives die eventually. You're very lucky if you get 5 years out of one.
DiskWarrior is a narrowly-tailored directory repair app with a few useless file-checking tools tossed in to please idiots. You just happen to be lucky enough to be one of those people with JUST THE KIND OF DAMAGE that DW is designed to repair.
Whether you think you can spare the cash isn't our call.

You don't have a Wii? You really do know what it's like to suffer. You want me to get you a milk bottle? A kleenex? I've got 2 kids in 200/month hobbies, on top of everything else, so I know all about priorities, dork. If you think it's silly to try to make sure I really need DW, then screw you. kj.

It's not a miracle worker. It's a great utility that fixes a lot of problems, so that you don't have to do a reinstall, though that *is* free. It's possible that it may not help.
You're asking questions that nobody can absolutely know the answers. People can only make educated guesses based on the info you provide.
Buy DW or don't.
Reinstall or don't.

Thanks. I'll probably buy DW when I can, but I think I'm going to reinstall. I should have nuked my refurb when I received it, since I could tell it was a custom install by the person that had it first. I think I would feel better having a fresh install anyway. kj.
